A Limbe based Non Governmental Organisation called Starlight Foundation has donated food stuffs to widows in Limbe, during the occasion of International Widows Day. The event in Limbe was celebrated last June 25, 2020, at the Women’s Empowerment Center.
The SUN gathered that the donations, including food items and toiletries were sponsored by UK based, Victorine Ndikum of the Victorine Ndikum Foundation and US based Enow Otto. They were donated to the Social Widows Association, SOWA in Limbe.
Handing over the items to the widows and other beneficiaries, Linda Ekabe, founder of Starlight Foundation, encouraged them not to feel rejected or abandoned due to the difficulties especially with the permanent absence of their husbands, because God will never abandon them. She called on the public not to take widows as misfits but to treat them with a lot of respect.
Presiding over the ceremony, the Limbe I sub delegate for Women Empowerment and the Family, Judith Dipang Mesame, applauded the magnanimity of Starlight Foundation and its donors and called on the administrative, religious and other bodies to respect the rights of widows, especially the right for them to have access to the properties of their late husbands.
She encouraged widows to equally know their rights and for other women to avoid co-habitation or “cam we stay”, which will make them vulnerable.
International Widows day every June 23 is a UN day that started in December 2011 and it is to highlight and equally raise awareness on the discrimination and injustice suffered by widows worldwide, after the death of their spouses.
